American Drivers Find Value In European Cars
As an American living in Indianapolis, which is after all the home of the world famous Indianapolis 500, I often wonder why so many car buyers are attracted to European cars. But once you start asking, you’ll find a few things that keep coming to the top of the list.
It seems that the number one item to attract buyers to any European brand is the engineering. You can talk all you want about torque, horsepower and all-wheel drive, but the bottom line is that German car makers have consistently been seen as number one when it comes to making a car that handles well, gets above average gas mileage, and still finds the time to look sleek. BMW and Mercedes-Benz have been at the top of the list for decades. There is an understanding that these cars should be fun to drive. I suppose the Autobahn contributes to this passion for speed, engineering and style.
One thing that insures the popularity of these brands is their insistence on top-of-the-line parts in the construction of their vehicles. And the construction of these vehicles has been so sound, that the life of these cars can be exceptionally long.
Even with this “need for speed” and a reputation for exacting engineering, Mercedes-Benz and BMW have their own sense of fun with the Smart Car and the Mini Cooper. Along with a spunky sense of style, these cars are a great buy for the eco-minded. Getting anywhere from 33 to 37 miles per gallon is no small thing in this economy. In fact, Europe has been concerned with oil and miles per gallon long before Americans began considering it seriously. And with the price of oil continuing to rise, you can be sure your European model won’t leave you pumping all your hard earned money into your gas tank.
If you still need more persuading, European models are also known to have a high resale value. Getting the most out of your investment is certainly its own reward. And if you are considering a vehicle you can live with for more than a couple of years, you should definitely consider a continental brand. They have been known to last for up to 500,000 miles. I’d like to see other brands attempt that! For minor repairs and general maintenance in Indianapolis I take my cars to Euro Motorworks.
European cars have a lot to love. If you are in the market for either a new or used car, check out these “over seas” brands. They may be just what you had in mind.
