Auto Repair 10 Most Wanted
In the lifetime of owning your car, you’ll probably have one, all, or just a few of the top ten things Indianapolis auto repair shops frequently see.
Number one on the list is your brake system. Most likely, this will be wear and tear on your brake pads. This is a simple repair job that takes some skill and some creative use of tools. For brake disc or drum repair, things get a little more dicey, so expect the prices to be up in the hundreds for that. Your brake lines, unless severed by a disgruntled ex, should be okay for the life of most vehicles.
If it’s not brakes, then it’s the lubrication. Oil changes are one of the most crucial, yet overlooked preventative things you can do for your vehicle. It lengthens engine life, reduces overheating possibilities, and keeps the resale value at a respectable level.
Next frequent is the coolant system, from the antifreeze to the radiator. A hot engine is a dead engine. It’s important to keep your reservoir to the fill line to keep the engine from overheating. And NEVER open the radiator cap while it’s hot. You should probably get the radiator and cooling system flushed at least once a year by a skilled Indianapolis auto repair shop. You’ll thank me later for the best $70 you ever spent.
The fourth most common repair request is for the ignition system, including the ignition, starter, and battery. Sometimes, a car not starting can be as simple, and relatively inexpensive as a dead battery. Other times, it’s a bum starter, a more expensive, exhaustive, and experience-necessary repair.
The fifth is the suspension system. Busted shocks or struts can make for an uncomfortable ride. And discomfort seems to be a good motivator to take your vehicle in for service.
Your fuel system is the sixth most frequent part of your car in need of repair. My mother always told me never to let my gas tank get below one-half. Now, that’s a little bit extreme. But, consistently running your car on less than one-quarter tank can cause damage to the electric fuel pump. So, don’t risk running on empty, or you’re in for a pricey repair.
The electrical system is the seventh most frequent part to need service. This includes anything from burnt-out bulbs to blown-out fuses. Because of the sophisticated computerized electronics in modern cars, it’s generally recommended to seek a service technician for more thorough electrical system repair. You’re probably safe and wise to change your own brake light, though.
I’m going to lump together the last three frequent repairs made by Indianapolis auto repair specialists in our little top ten list. Why? Because it’s fascinating that these are less frequent and also most expensive by far. This means, you’re more likely to save very little money by changing your own oil, but you could save a ton of money if your capable of repairing your own transmission, air conditioning system, or exhaust system. Of course, you probably own your own shop and aren’t even reading this. My point in all of this (in case you missed the clues along the way) is simple: maintain a steady plan of preventative care and your budget will thank you for it.
