Even though you've done the research and have a mental picture of how your next car should look and function, it's only when you get behind the wheel that you need to know you've made the right decision.

At some level, finding the right luxury vehicle is intuitive. Even though you’ve done the research and have a mental picture of how your next car should look and function, it’s only when you get behind the wheel that you need to know you’ve made the right decision.

Qualität: Audi owners know the German version of the word Quality very well. And so, when it comes to looking for place to keep their autos in good running order, discerning owners who have done their research know when they’ve found a quality shop. Just as when shopping for the car itself, it’s always worthwhile to shop around and compare mechanics qualified to deal with high performance vehicles. That can include asking for referrals from other owners, checking with the local Better Business Bureau, Triple A, Automotive Service Association and Angie’s List, to name a few. Another sign to look for is the National Institute for Automotive Service(ASE). ASE began in 1972 as a non-profit, independent organization dedicated to improving the quality of automotive service and repair through the voluntary testing and certification of automotive technicians. Finding a group of qualified automotive techs with a reputation for excellent work, top notch customer service and fair pricing might seem like a tall order, but it can be done.

What’s in a (Brand) Name?

The Audi brand long ago made a name for itself as a leader in high performance engines paired with elegant designs. In the 1980s, the company was a driving force behind the inline 5 cylinder, 2.1/2.2 L engine. Offered as a longer lasting and more fuel efficient alternative to more traditional 6 cylinder engines, this engine was used in both production vehicles and in race cars. More recently, Audi has produced ultra-clean burning diesel engines and has been experimenting with strong, yet lightweight frames aimed at working with hybrid fuel technology. Even the Audi brand has an interesting history of its own. It’s based on elements of the name of company’s founder, August Horch. It was a fortuitous coincidence, combining as it does the Latin imperative verb audi (you hear) and the surname “Horch,” the German cognate of the English “hark.” One of Germany’s oldest-established automobile manufacturers, Audi’s reputation as a high performance luxury car maker continues to catch the world’s ear. In 2008, Audi achieved the 13th record year in a row, surpassing the 1 million unit mark with 1,003,400 sales.

In June 2009, Audi announced that its latest models earned top ratings for safety in four high profile tests. The Audi A4 and Q5 achieved a top five-star rating in a new and more thorough Euro New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) safety tests. On the other side of the Atlantic, the U.S. National Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA) confirmed this performance and gave the vehicles a five-star rating in all categories. What’s more, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), a U.S. consumer protection organization, labeled the Audi Q5 its “Top Safety Pick” - or the best value when it comes to safety.

No matter what the make or model of vehicle, it’s safest to find a mechanic who listens to what you and your vehicle have to say. That’s why it’s important to have technicians who thoroughly know a vehicle in order to make a diagnosis.

In order to streamline operating costs, many shops have gone to a system of staffing their garages with a handful of master technicians and a number of apprentice technicians. And rather specialize in few brands done well, many shops attempt to take on a gamut of North American, Asian, and European makers, with varying results. Specialty shops offer something more: Service that includes everything from keeping a vehicle in good working order to modifications that improve performance for racing, complete service and repair, performance upgrades, brake and suspension upgrades, even race preparation and technical inspections, for those who go the quality route.

Euromotorworks provides European auto repair in Indianapolis to luxury car brands such as Audi.

Is an automobile a good investment? For years buying and collecting luxury autos and classic cars was looked upon as a frivolous activity for the rich or as strictly the domain of gear heads and wrench turners. Most investors thought of car collecting as a waste of money and time.

Oh how times have changed.

If you hear someone giggling in the background it could be that gear head we mentioned earlier. Why is he or she laughing? It’s simple, with the stock market in open free fall and retirement funds going belly up every day that collector car purchase made in 1970 is suddenly worth much more than the experts’ stock portfolios and 401K plans. And the good news is it’s not too late to do enter into some four-wheeled investing of your own.

To put it simply classic cars have held their value better than anyone ever dreamed. That Chevy Camaro that was purchased for $7,200 in 1968 could be worth more than $100,000 dollars at one of today’s high profile collector car auctions. Rare cars like Plymouth Superbirds and Ford Talladegas can fetch prices in excess of a half-million dollars. Rare European cars like 1950’s era Mercedes and Jaguars often see prices topping a million-dollars when they’re sold.

Granted, the best way to invest in collectible cars probably isn’t to mortgage the farm and buy a 1956 Mercedes coup, but it is still easy to find quality, investment grade automobiles. Many new collectors choose to find a car that is suitable for rebuilding for their first foray into the field. Not only is this a way to see a high profit margin on a purchased car but also many find the restoration process to be a fun and challenging hobby. The key to this is to find a car that can be restored for a manageable amount of money and would then be a sellable car. Late 1960’s model Chevy Camaros, Ford Mustangs, and other American muscle cars fall into this category. Not only are there ample parts for these makes there is also a ready group of potential buyers for the completed car. Due to the increased popularity of car collecting there are also many possible avenues through which to sell the car including the internet, car shows, and the large televised auctions for high quality, high dollar pieces.

For individuals that don’t want to be hands on and restore a car there is always the tried and true method of speculating on which cars are about to increase in value. Even in a down economy the original ‘big three’ American car makers still offer limited edition and collector’s editions on a yearly basis. Many people don’t know this because it is not something the automakers publicize a great deal. By keeping the news quiet and production runs low manufacturers create investment grade vehicles for the savvy buyer. However, just because a car is a collector’s edition doesn’t mean it will go up in value. Dodge Vipers and Plymouth Prowlers were high dollar machines when they were new and it was thought low production numbers would make the car’s values skyrocket. Instead the public didn’t warm to the odd looking Prowler and it became a major mistake for the Chrysler Corporation. Chances are if a car doesn’t look like something someone would want to drive it’s probably not a wise investment.

Before you try your hand at collecting, educate yourself and set a budget. Luxury auto repair and classic car maintenance won’t be cheap. And remember no investment is guaranteed to make money. Even if it doesn’t make you rich buying and having your dream car can be a lot more fun, and a lot less stressful, than watching your stock portfolio go into the tank.

So you’ve bought your dream luxury car, maybe a Porsche Boxster or a BMW Coupe. You’ve dreamed and saved for years to finally put that one special machine in your garage. Every Saturday you wash and wax and spoil your new baby on the outside. Then you take that afternoon drive and show your baby to the world. You roll down the windows, crank up the stereo, and enjoy the day.

Then you get home, close the garage door, and your baby is forgotten until next Saturday when you get up and repeat the process. It never occurs to you that you’ve forgotten a major part of her maintenance, and you’re potentially costing yourself thousands of dollars in resale value.

You forgot all about the interior.

Luxury and collectible cars aren’t like your daily driver. In order to protect the investment potential of these machines special steps must be taken, and that is doubly true with the interior. The interior of your daily driver is made to take abuse. The materials and manufacturing processes used to make the carpets, seats, and other interior parts turn out pieces that are functional, but far from luxurious in most cases. Synthetic carpets, upholstery, and accents are the norm among most builders. Such is not the case with higher end models. Most luxury cars today roll off the showroom floor adorned in hardwoods, real leather, and carpet nicer than what is on your bedroom floor. The problem with this is that the average car owner doesn’t know how to properly maintain and protect these areas. Petroleum based protection/cleaning sprays, detergents, and vacuum-cleaning do more harm than good to luxury car interiors.

First and foremost, keep your interior dry. Moisture is the hidden killer of the leathers and hardwoods in your car. After a day of driving with the windows down it’s important NOT to immediately seal your car. Instead it’s always a better idea to move the car into the garage—never leave your luxury car out in the elements—and let the temperature and humidity equalize before closing the windows in the car. It’s also a good idea to dust the car before closing the windows, but only use a dry cloth or feather duster. Chemicals in dusting agents aren’t designed for leathers or cloth. Dry dusting is the best option because of this.

It’s also important to clean upholstery as soon after a drive as possible. Dust, crumbs, dirt, etc. will work its way into soft leathers and into the gaps and crevices on your car’s seats. If the dust and debris is left in these spaces it can lead to mold and cracking of the leather. The best way of removing this dirt isn’t with a vacuum. Vacuums draw away too much of the needed moisture in fine leathers and can pull the precisely cut leather out of shape. A much better alternative is to use a soft-bristle brush to sweep the dirt and debris off the leather. Any dirt that ends up falling onto the carpets and floor mats will be easily vacuumed away.

After brushing the seats and dusting other areas it’s important to ‘feed’ your leather. Fine leathers have to be treated to ensure that they remain soft and supple and retain their color. Surprisingly your local furniture gallery might be a better place to shop for leather protection products than your auto parts store. Parts stores sell products designed for everyday cars and drivers, and don’t have the specialty products necessary to protect your new luxury car. Furniture galleries stock numerous products that will both protect and nourish the leather in your car, and keep it looking clean and new. Furniture galleries also sell products tailored to protecting fine hardwoods that will also help keep your car looking neat and will help retain its value.

Whether it’s a shiny, red Carrera or sleek Lexus sedan protect your luxury car investment. You’ve spent the money to realize your dream, now take the time and spend a little more money to keep your dream looking great and protect its investment value.

And for scheduled maintenace or repairs in Indianapolis, remember to bring your investment to EuroMotorworks, the best in Indianapolis auto repair.

When Bentley and Rolls-Royce split from their half-century partnership many experts thought it would signal the end of Bentley as a player in the ultra-luxury car game. After the debut of the new Bentley Mulsanne at the Frankfurt Auto Show those experts are now saying that Bentley has raised the bar for their competitors.

The Mulsanne is a tribute to founder W.O. Bentley’s vision of what an automobile should be. It’s big, powerful, and luxurious to a fault, and for the first time in recent memory it was designed and constructed entirely at the Bentley factory in Crewe, England. The car is a completely new design, not an improvement on earlier models or a new version of the Bentley Armage.

The new car is big, really big. At 219-inches it’s the length of an extended-cab pickup truck. It also harkens back to Bentley’s grand era with its new 6.75-litre, twin-turbocharged V8 engine. The engine produces an impressive 505 horsepower on pump gas, giving it the kind of raw power that Bentley was famous for in the mid 20th-century. Engineers also worked to include new performance technology into the engine. Drivers will notice that the ground-tearing torque for which Bentley is famous is still there, along with effortless acceleration. Along with this Bentley has introduced new technologies to meet modern emissions and efficiency standards.

To harness all that power the designers created a suspension and ride-control system second to none in the industry. The low-slung Mulsanne sits so low that there’s barely enough room to put a finger between the tire and the wheel well. The result is a low center of gravity that makes the machine handle comparably with much smaller, lighter vehicles. To further enhance the driving experience the designers have included a Drive Dynamics Control system. The system allows the driver to calibrate the suspension from soft to firm. It also offers the option of a custom suspension configuration via a multimedia input system. With this option drivers control a multitude of settings and have the option to store setting for future use.

All this is well and good for the normal luxury car buyer, but fans of Bentley worried that the new car would be a departure from the luxury for which the company is best known. Well, those people will be happy to know that Bentley has not only included all the appointments expected in one of their autos and have even managed to expand on the luxurious nature of the vehicle.

Inside you’ll find modern ergonomics seamlessly melded with the features you would expect in a Bentley. There’s plenty of wood used in the dash and console areas, with chrome accents on the dials other areas. Added to this Bentley is a multimedia system complete with a screen and joystick for navigation. The system controls not only the sound and navigation systems, but is also the interface for the Drive Dynamics Control system. Adding to the overhaul is a brand new steering wheel, designed to be more driver friendly and comfortable on long rides.

The outside of the machine is classic Bentley from the headlights to the rear haunch. The car has the Bentley stance, and the classic Bentley look to the grille and hood area. Not only does the classic Bentley logo connect the machine to its past, but the design team borrowed the classic Bentley headlight arrangement for this edition. Smaller outboard lights reminiscent of the company’s pre Rolls-Royce days flank the main lights, with day-running lamps ringing the main headlight.

The look and feel of this car is classic Bentley, which was the goal when the designers started with a blank sheet of paper. The Mulsanne should put worries to bed that the grand old make might fade into the pages of history. In fact, this Bentley seems poised to write a new chapter for the famous luxury auto.

In Indiana, bring your Bentley to Euromotorworks for the best in Indianapolis auto repair.

Winter is a sad time for a lot of drivers. Snow, ice, sleet, bad drivers, and a host of other concerns are enough to make you forget about getting your European import ready for winter, choosing instead to put it in the safety of the garage until spring. No one wants the expense of European auto repair. Little do these owners realize, however, that driving in winter is no harder on their car than summer use as long as they have their import ready for cold weather.

Europe is by its nature a cold continent. Get away from the Riviera or the Mediterranean Sea region and you’ll find some of the harshest weather on the planet. Is it any wonder then that the luxury cars born of this climate are ready for inclement weather? Of course not so why put that baby away for the winter when you can let it thrive instead?

Winter care for your European import should start in the glove compartment, and a once over of the owner’s manual. This tome of knowledge will tell you exactly what the manufacturer sets as the basic maintenance to get the machine ready for winter. Often overlooked in this are two basic, and vital, elements of keeping any car on the road: motor oil and coolant.

If you delve deeply enough into your owner’s manual you’ll find a listing of the proper fluids to use in your auto, i.e. motor oil, transmission fluid, brake fluid, etc. You might be surprised to find that different fluids are recommended for different seasons. While most new cars operate in warm weather using 10W-40 weight motor oils thinner oil is a good bet in winter months. Switching to a 10W-30 or 5W-30 oil means that the oil is slightly thinner than its summertime counterpart, and as such will begin to flow more easily through your engine during a cold start. While this difference doesn’t seem like much it’s something that can save significant wear and tear on your engine. During cold starts the surfaces inside your engine are protected by on a thin film of oil. Until the oil at the bottom of the engine starts flowing your engine is subject to the most damaging friction forces it will see in its lifetime. The switch to thinner oil will get that lifeblood flowing faster and reduce unnecessary wear.

The radiator has special needs in winter weather as well. In summer months it’s ok, and sometimes advisable, to replace some of your car’s coolant with plain water. Most coolant solutions actually work better when mixed with water. But when winter rolls around overlooking what’s under the radiator cap can be a death sentence to your auto. At temperatures below freezing that water will start to freeze and expand. In a worst case scenario your engine will fill with ice and at the very least push out freeze plugs, leading to downtime and a trip to the shop. If the freeze plugs don’t work, or if there’s just too much expanding fluid to deal with, the engine block will crack and suddenly you’re looking at several thousand dollars worth of repairs. This is easily avoided. An inexpensive antifreeze tester can be used to see how low of a temperature your car can stand. If it doesn’t test to at least -20 degrees then it’s time to drain the system and replace the antifreeze. This is easy to do at home or can be handled at most quick oil change shops.

For just a few bucks, and very little time spent, you can winterize your European car and get it ready for the harsh weather. There’s no reason at all why you can’t enjoy your baby all year around. Who knows, you might just find that your fancy car is right at home when the temperature starts falling.

Move over Mercedes. Look out Audi. Beware BMW, there’s a new player in the all-important luxury sport sedan market. Saab has unveiled its new 9-5 sports sedan and has taken aim at the rest of the industry as the ‘other’ luxury make ups its stake in the industry.

Many industry insiders predicted that the new Saab 9-5 would never see the light of day. The current 9-5 has grown dated and out of style and seemed to be little more than Saab’s placeholder in the luxury auto market. The announcement of General Motors’ bankruptcy further heightened rumors that the 9-5 was a dead concept, but Saab’s purchase by exotic car maker Koenigsegg means the new Saab will hit showrooms sometime in the second quarter of 2010.

Devotees of the Swedish make won’t be disappointed by the new design. Unlike other recent designs that have seemed to be little more than Saab’s version of competitor models, this car is all Saab, including some of the quirky additions that the maker is known for. The driver compartment has been retooled, with green gauges, day/night switches, heads-up displays, and analog gauges patterned after aircraft readouts. The interior overall is far more roomy that previous model Saabs, giving ample leg and headroom to the driver and passengers in the front and back of the auto.

Outside the car has a totally new look, and will certainly make its competitors head back to the drawing boards. At first look it’s clear that Saab has a background in the aircraft industry. The car’s shape is sleek, clean, and aerodynamic. The front windscreen cleanly wraps around the front of the cabin, and blends cleanly into the side glasses. There are no gaping duct inlets, no fender vents, and no protruding aero. The car resembles a ‘cleaned-up’ model about to be sent to the wind tunnel instead of a production model ready for the showroom floor, and it should. The car borrows many design elements from Saab’s Aero-X Coupe concept car that debuted with much fanfare several years ago.

The front and rear lighting system has been completely retooled and it shows. The front headlamps wrap around the fender and feature day running lamps as well as accent lamps. In back the lights blend cleanly into the car’s overall look, and feature accent lights as well.

Saab fans will also be happy to know that major retooling has been done to the 9-5 under the hood as well. Saab has long been an industry leader in turbocharger technology and it shows in the 9-5’s power-plant options. Saab has always been a proponent of pairing turbochargers with small displacement engines, and it does so again with 2010 9-5. The base model engine will be a turbocharged 2.0 liter, 220-horsepower V-6, but a treat awaits those who favor the sport side of the sports sedan sector. For the driver looking for driving excitement Saab is offering a force-fed, 300-horsepower 2.8 liter engine paired exclusively to Saab’s lauded cross-wheel drive (XWD) system. European consumers will also have the option of a turbocharged 160-horsepower diesel engine. It is unclear when the diesel engine will make its debut in America, but with green initiatives and mileage conscious consumers powering the diesel market in America there’s little doubt that it will eventually reach western shores.

The 2010 9-5 is also significant for Saab as a company because of it’s “All Swedish” bloodline. The car is the first ground up machine for Saab since its purchase by Swedish exotic maker Koenigsegg, and the car will be built in Sweden instead of at the Opel plant in Germany like most present Saab models.

The new Saab will hit showrooms in 2010 with plenty of buzz preceding its arrival. Fans of the Saab name will be pleased with the new car’s adherence to the company’s legacy, and new fans will be born out of the car’s new innovations and striking looks. There’s no guarantee that the Saab company will survive the turbulent automotive market and its downturn, but the new 9-5 will certainly help the make keep its head above water for a while longer.

A lot has transpired on the world stage over the past twenty years. Gas prices have yo-yoed. Political regimes have been toppled. Yet despite some predictions to the contrary, most people still take gas powered vehicles to work every day. With the talk in the automotive world these days centering on more fuel efficient and environmentally conscious vehicles, luxury brands like Lexus and Mercedes Benz are testing the waters by introducing hybrid sedans to the U.S. market in 2009.
What Makes a Hybrid a Hybrid?

By convention, a hybrid vehicle is simply one that uses two or more separate power sources to provide motion to the vehicle. Most often, this takes the form of an internal combustion engine and electric batteries.

The so-called mild hybrid incorporates a regenerative brake and electric support drive, but does not have a dedicated electric-only mode. Some designs beginning to show up on the market offer several driving modes that address the issues of fuel economy and power in various combinations.

After a shaky start in the late 1990s, the modern iteration of the hybrid vehicle now appears to have a foothold in the automotive industry. Hybrid powered vehicles sold worldwide by Toyota alone reached 1.7 million vehicles by January 2009.
The Pursuit of Perfection Two Decades Later

Perhaps it’s no surprise that Lexus, which began as an offshoot of Toyota, whose Prius has been the standard bearer for hybrid automobiles for several years now, would venture into the hybrid market with a luxury sedan.

Lexus chose its 20th year in the U.S. market with a new vehicle to debut its initial hybrid offering — the HS 250h. Hailed as a new type of vehicle, the four-cylinder can function in four driving modes: Power, Regular, ECO and EV. When in EV mode, the HS 250hk runs solely on electric power; the result, company claims, qualifies as a super low emissions vehicle. And “modes” isn’t all that’s borrowed from the computer industry: An optional Heads-up Display projects vehicle speed and other relevant data onto the windshield.

In a move designed to cut down on down time spent driving, the optional Lexus Enform enables access to multiple points from a personal computer or any Internet-enabled device. Data can be sent over the Web directly to the vehicle’s optional navigation System.

Under the hood, the HS 250h boasts 187 horsepower and an EPA-combined rating of 35 miles per gallon. According to Lexus, that gives the HS the best combined fuel mileage of any luxury car in the U.S.
Mercedes Benz
Not to be outdone, Mercedes Benz Hybrid power comes to its S-Class in the form of the S400 Hybrid. With a combined 295 horsepower (3.5L V-6, with an additional 20 horsepower from an electric motor), it is possible that the mild hybrid S-Class could might attain a fuel economy comparable to that of a compact sedan. The entire look gets a light makeover, including new headlights and taillights, new grill, and larger side mirrors. New optional safety systems include features like Attention Assist and Nightview Assist, which uses an infrared-assisted headlight system that helps the driver see further than with traditional lamps.

Other luxury brands seem to be weighing their options: Makers like BMW, Cadillac, and Infiniti have announced plans to offer vehicles with a hybrid power options. Meanwhile, some makers such as Audi seem to be entrenched in the non-hybrid camp , focusing their greener designs on ultra efficient diesel motors. It remains to be seen if buyers will be willing to pay an up charge for luxury features in a more eco-friendly package. It could be another interesting 20 years.

With a sluggish economy and opinions still being volleyed over the federal government stepping in to prop up domestic car companies, why even think about picking up a luxury car like Porsche or BMW?

While it might seem counter intuitive, a down economy might be the time to consider such a luxury vehicle.

Everything from American-made SUVS to compacts have come under fire in recent years due to fuel inefficiency issues, and are in large part what prompted the government to shape its “Cash For Clunkers” program. The simple premise of trading an old, fuel-inefficient model for a new, more fuel efficient one at a discount seems to be bearing some fruit. Typically not known for their fuel efficiency, luxury vehicles are at least as guilty of this as their more affordable counter parts. A key difference, however, is that they are more typically described as “investments” rather than “money pits.” There are several good reasons for this.

That Certain “I Don’t Know What”

What’s in a name? Quite a bit, if that name is Porsche, Audi, BMW, Jaguar, Rolls Royce or the like. Most of these companies are not only associated with high quality and high price tags, they crank out fewer of them. And an inherently smaller market makes each one of their vehicles a relative rarity.

While not immune to depreciation, luxury vehicles do tend to hold their value longer than other types of vehicles. This is in part due to market forces: So long as people dream of having a luxury vehicle, and have the means to buy them, companies will continue to supply them.

Even with luxury items, it’s human nature to find the best deal. A considerate consumer, it seems, can always find ways to save money and get what he or she wants. With any vehicle purchase, some of the best practical advice is to choose a quality model, in a desirable color with popular features that will help it retain its value. Keep the car well-serviced and maintained. It all sounds simple, but how to get a deal?

In such a dour economic climate, a dealer may be more willing to haggle in order to move the product. That might be especially true during the gap between the time the “Cash for Clunkers” vehicles roll off the lot and the time it takes for the government reimbursement check to arrive. Dealers who have had a few high end models they haven’t been able to move may be more willing to do some incentivizing of their own to keep sales flowing.

As with any major purchase, weighing the features you want with what you can afford should take into account the total cost of ownership for that vehicle a good deal in the long run. The purchase price is only part of the equation: The costs of luxury car ownership include financing fees, registration fees, insurance premiums, operating costs, and, yes, depreciation.

The Interest in Appreciation

Whether used for everyday driving or for a weekend outing, all vehicles are subject to the same forces on the road. So why do some cars hold their value better than others? Depreciation is determined in large part by market forces. If a car is isn’t comfortable, reliable, or aesthetically pleasing, it will likely depreciate faster than one that is. By the same token, the reputation of a car with superior handling, comfortable and looks precedes it.

In some instances, well maintained vehicles of certain vintages actually appreciate in value. Only time will tell what a “vintage” year will be. In the meantime, should an owner ever decide to trade or part with a luxury vehicle, chances are he or she won’t be taking much of a loss. And down economies have a way of turning upwards, bringing with them the potential for a larger buyers’ market for luxury goods.

The company that created one of the most popular and iconic vehicles in history is trying to once again change the auto industry. Volkswagen changed the automotive world when it introduced the Beetle, the company’s original car for the people. This time the company plans to make another “people’s car,” but it will be a green car for the people.

The company’s first step toward becoming the green car leader is the introduction of their line of TDI diesel vehicles. It wasn’t too many years ago that diesel brought to mind visions of noisy, smoke-belching trucks zooming along the interstate. Volkswagen is changing that way of thinking with its line of diesel cars that produce fewer greenhouse gasses than most hybrid vehicles without the loss of range or power that plague current hybrids. Volkswagen currently offers their Touareg, Jetta, Jetta SportWagen, and Golf models with the TDI diesel package.

While the engineers and designers at Volkswagen are to thank for the mechanical side of this innovation it’s the diesel industry itself that has brought about the fuel to make this possible. Ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) fuel was developed in the 1980’s, but didn’t become popular until the push for lower greenhouse emissions. Since 2007 use of the fuel has been mandated in the United States for all highway diesel vehicles. Volkswagen saw the potential for ULSD and set about to design a new engine to make the most of the technology. The result is the TDI diesel engine. TDI uses turbo-charging to make the engine more efficient, and direct injection to deliver the performance demanded by today’s driver. The result is a quick responding, powerful engine that outperforms many comparably sized gasoline engines, and gets a stingy 41-mpg on average. The engine is also quiet which has been a major concern in the diesel passenger car industry.

Volkswagen isn’t stopping there however, and their next project could revolutionize the 21st century auto industry the way the Beetle did in the 20th century.

Enter the VW E-Up! concept vehicle. The car was unveiled in September of 2009 with Volkswagen dubbing it the Beetle of the 21st century, and like its famous predecessor it is a car full of new ideas. The new car is the smallest, lightest Volkswagen ever built, weighing in at just 2,387 pounds. The small cabin of the car has brought about changes like no dashboard to provide more leg room and an innovative 3+1 seating configuration that leaves the area behind the driver open for cargo and thereby creating more driver leg room. The most startling innovation in the E-Up! is its lightweight lithium-ion battery pack. Even though it weighs in at over 500 pounds the battery is powering the entire car. Some hybrid batteries weigh as much and just power around a third of the vehicle’s total output. The battery pack does its job well as it is able to generate 150 lb.-ft of torque and will speed the car to 60 mph in under 11 seconds. If more power is needed the car also features solar panels on the roof and sun visors to generate electrical power.

Volkswagen doesn’t dream that the car will gain the label of fine European automobile or see 21-million units on the world’s roadways like its famous predecessor, but does see the E-Up! as a viable alternative for city drivers and short-range commuters. The company’s introduction of the car does signal the industry that the former leader in automotive innovation is once-again poised to drive the industry into a green future.

When you think of luxury automobiles, you probably start at the low end of the high-price dealerships: Hummer, Mercedes, BMW, etc. It’s not very often that you get a glimpse of some of the world’s most expensive vehicles: all a luxury considering the price tags. Here they are, no clunkers, all cash, along with some of their most notable features.

Let us begin with the Maybach Zeppelin. This $506,000 car promises to eradicate any unwanted highway smells from your cabin with its illuminated atomizer that gingerly emits your favorite fragrance. No more skunk, unless of course that happens to be your scent of choice. In which case, sniff on, my wealthy readers!

If smells are not a big concern for you in your luxury car, perhaps it is power. For nearly $2 mil you could be driving the 678 horsepower V12 Cinque Roadster. This baby, which sports carbon fiber racing seats on a titanium suspension, can get from nothing to 60 mph in 3.3 seconds. Just because you have the money to take it slow an easy, does not mean that your car ought to do the same.

Have more than $2 million to put down on a luxury automobile? Consider Koenigsegg’s CCXR or Bugatti’s Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport. These are both well over the mark.

Despite the global financial event we all are facing, the goods for the ultra luxury crowd with six or seven figures to lay down are not facing empty showrooms. People with loads of money are still looking for custom options and service beyond compare. So, car makers like Rolls-Royce and Bentley are not hurting for clients in this rough patch.

For well over $1 million you could have a limited production Pagani Zonda F Roadster. This machine is only produced with 24 brothers and sisters, all with primo racing technology and power in their V12 Mercedes-Benz AMG engines. The Coupe version, which is more like a Formula One car than a simple mid-life crisis treatment, is running about $1.4 mil. It’s ultra-safe since it takes crash structure cues from its race car cousins. So, put the pedal down and let the good times roll. And have the pleasure of walking away from it all with a little less cash and a great story to tell the grandkids.

Cars of great expense, like most things that the wealthy adorn their lives with, exude some qualities and boast certain amenities that make them such one of a kind accessories. For instance, with a price tag of $1.4 million, the Maybach Landaulet doesn’t even need you to drive it. It is built with the chauffeur in mind. The top opens, of course, but from the rear where the owner-rider is seated. The front compartment is closed off with a clear glass partition absconded with curtains. The wind will only whip through the wealthy locks of the person in the backseat, never the driver. And, if that’s not enough to get you to sign on the dotted (with gold, no doubt) line, let me mention the folding tables and reclining white leather seats. And if any gray skies try to bring about the rain of ruin, an umbrella can be stowed in a door slot. This is all standard.

Despite the excess, the market is alive and well. The only way these luxury automobile makers can expect to remain after this recession is to keep doing what they do: limit production to maintain scarcity and engorged price tags, provide the best service among every single car maker, and put a lot of time, talent, and moolah behind new technology. Actually, I think this a good way for any business to stay afloat in the days and months to come.

Hoosiers looking for some ways to save money on auto service in Indianapolis don’t need to look much farther than their own backyard.

Routine maintenance, while sometimes inconvenient and often times looked at as unnecessary can definitely extend the life of your car (and ultimately the balance in your checking account). Most of us keep up with our oil changes, but there are several other tasks that will help keep your car running better and longer - and the good news is that you can probably take care of them yourself.

Midas, Jiffy Lube, Meineke, even your local auto dealer will all charge you big bucks for routine oil changes. For some of us this may be the way to go, particularly if our time is more valuable than the oil change. But with an oil change costing anywhere from $30 and up, most of us can save at least $10 by doing the work at home. Another way to save? Forget the standard “three months or 3000 miles.” Most cars can go twice that long before requiring an oil change, but be sure to check the owner’s manual to see what your manufacturer recommends for your particular vehicle. And if you still find yourself in the shop, save yourself some money by sticking to the basic oil change and forgoing all of the “optional maintenance” they’ll try to sell you.

Brake pad replacements are another project that many drivers can tackle on their own. Not sure if your pads need to be replaced? Brake pads can last anywhere from 15,000 - 40,000 miles, depending on your car, where you’re driving (i.e. city vs. highway), and your driving habits. Most cars these days have a sensor that squeaks when the pads are worn and due for replacement, so if you’re hearing that it’s definitely time to check it out. And if you’re hearing grinding or feeling anything out of the ordinary when you hit the brakes, chances are you’ve waited too long for a do-it-yourself project. Having a pro take a look at it is probably the smartest, and safest, way to go.

A couple of other simple and cost-saving maintenance tasks are monitoring and changing air and fuel filters. Air filters can typically be changed in a matter of minutes, leaving your car more powerful and fuel-efficient. Fuel filters also require regular maintenance, as they help to protect finely-tuned (aka “expensive”) engine components and make your car run more efficiently. The average life of a fuel filter is about a year.

Obviously, if you’ve never tried your hand at basic auto maintenance you’re going to need some help to get started. Most of us have a parent, sibling, friend or neighbor who knows their way around an engine and would be happy to help if asked. If your friends and family are just as much in the dark as you are, however, you might be well served to find and take a short course in basic auto repair. Not only would this save you money by allowing you to do the simple, routine upkeep but would help educate you on what to look for and ask when a job comes along requiring professional auto service, hopefully saving you the expense of shoddy and/or unnecessary work.

In the lifetime of owning your car, you’ll probably have one, all, or just a few of the top ten things Indianapolis auto repair shops frequently see.

Number one on the list is your brake system. Most likely, this will be wear and tear on your brake pads. This is a simple repair job that takes some skill and some creative use of tools. For brake disc or drum repair, things get a little more dicey, so expect the prices to be up in the hundreds for that. Your brake lines, unless severed by a disgruntled ex, should be okay for the life of most vehicles.

If it’s not brakes, then it’s the lubrication. Oil changes are one of the most crucial, yet overlooked preventative things you can do for your vehicle. It lengthens engine life, reduces overheating possibilities, and keeps the resale value at a respectable level.

Next frequent is the coolant system, from the antifreeze to the radiator. A hot engine is a dead engine. It’s important to keep your reservoir to the fill line to keep the engine from overheating. And NEVER open the radiator cap while it’s hot. You should probably get the radiator and cooling system flushed at least once a year by a skilled Indianapolis auto repair shop. You’ll thank me later for the best $70 you ever spent.

The fourth most common repair request is for the ignition system, including the ignition, starter, and battery. Sometimes, a car not starting can be as simple, and relatively inexpensive as a dead battery. Other times, it’s a bum starter, a more expensive, exhaustive, and experience-necessary repair.

The fifth is the suspension system. Busted shocks or struts can make for an uncomfortable ride. And discomfort seems to be a good motivator to take your vehicle in for service.

Your fuel system is the sixth most frequent part of your car in need of repair. My mother always told me never to let my gas tank get below one-half. Now, that’s a little bit extreme. But, consistently running your car on less than one-quarter tank can cause damage to the electric fuel pump. So, don’t risk running on empty, or you’re in for a pricey repair.

The electrical system is the seventh most frequent part to need service. This includes anything from burnt-out bulbs to blown-out fuses. Because of the sophisticated computerized electronics in modern cars, it’s generally recommended to seek a service technician for more thorough electrical system repair. You’re probably safe and wise to change your own brake light, though.

I’m going to lump together the last three frequent repairs made by Indianapolis auto repair specialists in our little top ten list. Why? Because it’s fascinating that these are less frequent and also most expensive by far. This means, you’re more likely to save very little money by changing your own oil, but you could save a ton of money if your capable of repairing your own transmission, air conditioning system, or exhaust system. Of course, you probably own your own shop and aren’t even reading this. My point in all of this (in case you missed the clues along the way) is simple: maintain a steady plan of preventative care and your budget will thank you for it.

There are slightly less than a million auto repair shops in Indianapolis. How do you pick the one right for you? The potential for fraud and scams is very real, but keep in mind that most repair places are above board and not taking advantage of you. Here’s some helpful tips to consider when shopping for a repair facility.

If your vehicle is still under factory warranty, simply return it to any new car dealer for free repair, as long as the part being repaired is covered by the warranty. Once the warranty is expired, you do not have to return to the dealer for any repairs. (It’s best to use the dealers during the warranty period, as most manufacturers will not pay for repairs by an unauthorized, non-dealer repair shop.) Simply take your car to the place of your choosing. These tips will help you pick the right place.

Generally speaking, independent facilities are less expensive than dealer-owned shops. They come in many varieties, usually categorized by their specialty: mufflers/exhaust, tires, alignments, brakes, transmissions, air conditioning, electrical, and even retailers, like PepBoys or other auto part sales places with actual technicians. New dealerships may have the latest training and tools, but there is little to no direct contact with the technician. The independent shop is much more personable, as you typically deal with the tech from start to finish.

Independent auto repair shops in Indianapolis tend to be smaller, family-owned operations. The expertise of the technicians is often broader than a tech at a dealer, since the indie guys work on a wide range of vehicles. Some have access to the latest tools for diagnostics, but others don’t. You can still trust these smaller service stations to handle most minor repairs. The kind to avoid is the kind with no one talking about them, with no regard for the business’ approval rating, with no repeat customers. These places are looking for the next sucker to scam. Typically, they haven’t been around for long and are located in high traffic areas, like near interstates, in order to lure visitors into their trap. They only care about making a quick buck. They use scare tactics and upsell parts and services. They use high pressure to get you to agree on major repairs. They have no affiliation with service organizations like AAA, ASE, local chamber of commerce, or local repair shop organization. Money goes into the pocket of the owner, instead of into research and develop. If they can’t even offer a minimal guarantee on their work, stay away at all costs.

Go to a facility recommended by friends or family. Build a relationship with any of the smaller auto repair shops in Indianapolis; one that will last. Don’t base your decision on price or pretty advertising. Familiarize yourself with the Motorist Assurance Program Standards of Service. The shop you choose should live by these. Always get a written quote on price of service. The final bill should be no more than 120% of this amount. The estimate should also include all parts and labor charges. If you doubt, ask for your old parts back. If you need to dispute, start with the boss, then the BBB, and, only if necessary, call a lawyer. And, if you pay with a credit card, you can dispute the charges when that bill comes in the mail.

There are a lot of cars to choose from: domestic, foreign, sports cars, family cars. You may consider the purchase costs, the ownership costs, or even the way you feel when you drive it. But, have you considered how the service experience will be? When it comes to giving their customers an experience, there’s nothing like BMW service, in Indianapolis and elsewhere.

BMW has a comprehensive menu of premium services for their customers that is, frankly, unrivaled. They come at no cost to you, the buyer, so long as you purchase your new BMW soon.

For whichever comes first, you will have no maintenance costs for 50,000 miles or 48 months. This “Ultimate Service” plan includes a performance-saving limited warranty, a maintenance program like no other, a safety plan that includes a state-of-the-art appointment setting system, and roadside assistance with unlimited mileage. Who else can offer such an extraordinary and well-rounded service plan?

The limited warranty on all new BMW vehicles covers any material- or craftsman-related defects during the initial four years or 50,000 miles. The maintenance program covers all of the recommended services during the coverage period, including wear and tear replacement of brake pads and discs and even wiper blades. The coolest thing about the safety plan is TeleService. This exclusive benefit actually keeps your vehicle responsible for its own upkeep: the vehicle will contact the BMW service center in Indianapolis (or wherever is closest) when any kind of maintenance is necessary. No more post-it notes! And, with the unlimited mileage roadside assistance, peace of mind is riding along 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Again, this is all at no cost to you when you buy new. Other brands will add this on at a cost, and still expect you to pay a deductible and other costs. You pay nothing upfront and nothing for four years.

Another great aspect of BMW service is their FastService plan. This keeps your time in your own hands. Ultimately, you’ll be in and out in under two hours. And those two hours aren’t spent trying to figure out why the floors are so sticky, either. The BMW FastService center has WiFi, complimentary refreshments and even opportunity to test drive the latest models. Relax, or keep working. You car will be ready before you know it, whether it’s for an oil service, fuel injector cleaning, glass repair, brake services, battery replacement, special-order installation, tire services including tire pressure monitor reset, vehicle maintenance check, or a simple light bulb replacement.

If your BMW doesn’t set the appointment for you, you can always use the Web Scheduling feature and schedule the time most convenient for you. Or, if time is too tight and you can’t make it in, BMW’s Mobile Assistance Program will make a “house call”, providing on-site assistance for flat tires, dead batteries, empty tanks, or other drive-inhibiting emergencies.

If the services for under the hood isn’t enough to convince you, then maybe you’ll be wooed by the expert detailing services you’ll find at the BMW service center. Indianapolis is known for two things: bugs and tar. Well, okay, maybe for more than that. But the BMW experts can handle removal of both. They can also wash and wax your BMW, or clean and preserve its leather interior. Get the carpets and floor mats shampooed. Have the air conditioner treated and the engine compartment cleaned. And their detailing of the instrument panels is unparalleled. Just like the all around service experience. Inside and out, BMW takes care of the vehicles and the owners.

The number one reason experts of auto repair in Indianapolis see vehicles is for brake system repair. Ill-working brakes can be a deadly issue. So, it’s easy to say that the most important part of your vehicle is the braking system. A good driver–that’s you, right?–should know how to inspect their brakes, understand the little inspection, and be able to fix it or tell someone who knows how to fix it what’s wrong.
This all begins with having a grasp on how a car’s brake system works. There are two main types of brake systems: drum and disk brake.Drums use hydraulics to press the pad against a brake drum to slow down a vehicle. You press the brake pedal and a piston in your master cylinder (it’s directly connected to where you add and monitor your brake fluid, usually) sends pressure through the brake lines to wheel cylinders inside the brake drum. This pressing causes friction, which is what really slows the car down, as far as the physics go of it. This friction keeps the wheel from turning, which is, by definition, what braking is all about.Brake drums are flat on the top and heavy, cylinder-shaped pieces of metal, like a drum. They are typically found on the rear wheels between the rim and the drive wheel. So, the brake pads on the shoes are forced onto the drum by the inside piston, which gets its hydraulic pressure from the master cylinder.

A disk brake system is a different animal altogether, except obviously for the use of friction to stop and hydraulic pressure via a master cylinder. When you press the brake pedal, the master cylinder’s piston sends pressure down the brake lines to a caliper. The brake caliper closes, bringing the pad to the rotor, stopping the vehicle.
The rotor, which anyone in auto repair in Indianapolis could tell you, is nothing more than a round plate of metal that’s “pinched” by brake pad-wearing calipers. Sort of the way you might hold a Frisbee.

The master cylinder, which seems to be doing a lot of the work (except for pressing the brake pedal… that’s all you), is sending the pressure down in the form of brake fluid. It is very important for you to keep an eye on the brake fluid. It shouldn’t be chunky. It shouldn’t be too dark (this may mean some oil has slipped in.
Now, armed with this knowledge, you can at least seem somewhat car-savvy and sophisticated when you walk into an auto repair business in Indianapolis, or wherever. You should now know how to look at the brake fluid in the reservoir above the master cylinder. You should know to follow the brake lines (typically running along side the outside of the body, underneath the vehicle.) You should know what kind of brakes you have: drum, disk, or in some cases, both. You should know what may need replacing. If it was a brake pad, the built-in warning indicator would be screeching every time you come to a stop. If you prefer to do the work yourself, there’s plenty of information to be found here on the Internet.

Repairs for BMWs can be quite expensive. It is important to find a knowledgeable and reputable dealer. You can locate BMW repair shops in Indianapolis via search engines on the web. You can verify the reputation of the shop with a consumer grading service for your area.

Brake repairs are a critical aspect to keeping your family safe. It’s best not to take chances and have them repaired as soon as you notice there is a problem. Brake rotors for BMWs, like other import cars are built with minimal thickness to save weight. This means they cannot be “turned” like domestics, they must be replaced. They are also more sensitive to warping from heat. Overheated brakes are the second most common cause of failure. The first if wear and tear.

There are a few tips to help extend the life of your brakes. The first is to keep the hydraulic reservoir at the proper level with the type of fluid recommended by BMW. Next, wash your brakes off at the same time as your car. This will ensure they stay free of dust and dirt. Lastly, never touch, spray or drip any lubricants or oil on the brake friction surfaces. If this were to occurred, immediately spray the surface with brake cleaner to remove completely.

You should visually inspect your BMW brakes every six months. The rotors should be free of concentric scoring or other obvious defects. Any discoloration may be a sign of overheating. The brake pads should also be inspected for uneven wear, cracking or breakage on the friction surface. The brake drums should not have excessive grooves. Like the brake pads, the shoes should also be worn evenly. Have these looked at by a qualified mechanic to be safe.

The sound your brakes make can also be a signal that they need repaired or replaced. A slight brushing sound from the pads lightly touching the rotors is perfectly normal. There are a few sounds to be aware of that can indicate problems. A squeaking noise can be caused by dust or dirt on the brakes, loose pads vibrating or worn pads. A rhythmic, pulsating noise can indicate a warped rotor. Any constant grinding noise means real trouble. The most important thing to remember is as soon as the problem is noticed you should get it repaired immediately. Any delay could be extremely dangerous.

Rotors and drums that are overstressed can break. Brakes may be too worn or damaged to stop your BMW in an emergency. The longer you delay in fixing brake problems the more the cost will be to do so. Badly worn, overheated or warped rotors can cause damage to wheel bearings and the wheel hub assembly. These repairs and parts are often much more expensive than just fixing the brakes themselves. Brakes should also be inspected for warping, proper proportioning balance and wheel bearing play among others. A full inspection could also uncover underlying problems that could eventually become costly or dangerous. Contact a BMW repair shop to schedule a check up on your brakes today!

Repairs for your Lexus can be expensive. There are some ways to keep your costs down by completing simple monthly checks that can alert you to potential problems that can be dealt with before you end up paying for expensive repairs. Checking these little things on a regular basis could keep you out of a Lexus repair shop as much as possible.

Check the fluid levels on your Lexus. Your manufacturer is required to specify all the fluids to be used in your Lexus and the OE specifications for each in the owner’s manual. Before adding any fluids to your Lexus make sure to check the manual. There are requirements that OE oils and coolants must be mixable with “off the shelf” products in the event of an emergency. It is not suggested for long-term use. There are some fluids that must be at certain specifications so it is critical to know the difference.

The oil level should be checked when the engine is warm. If the level is consistently low it could indicate an oil leak. This should be investigated further with on your own or with the help of a qualified Lexus mechanic. Brake fluid should be checked with all other fluids. This fluid is toxic and should be kept away from hands and eyes. Coolant or radiator fluid is the most important part of your car’s cooling system. Low coolant can lead to a breakdown and expensive repairs if the engine overheats. If the reservoir or radiator is low you may have a leak that needs to be inspected. Other fluids to check regularly are power steering fluid, automatic transmission fluid, hydraulic clutch fluid and windshield washer fluid.

It is also a good idea to check your radiator hoses and clamps. Old hoses and loose clamp can cause a coolant leak. The belts on your Lexus should be checked from time to time and should all be changed periodically to avoid major repair bills. It there is a shrieking sound when you press the gas pedal it could mean the belts are too loose and need to be tightened or replaced. Depending on the car belts are used to operate the fan, water pump, alternator, air conditioner, smog pump and power steering pump. Manufacturers recommend using a tension gauge to test the belts and include the appropriate tension in the owner’s manual.

The engine should also be checked for leaks. Most systems in the Lexus are closed systems, meaning the fluids do not get used up or go anywhere. If you notice any are low there is a possibility of a leak. Generally you don’t need to know the name of the fluid or the part it’s leaking from to find a leak or to report it. The fluid can be identified by color and consistently.

You should also check for battery corrosion, working lights, windshield wipers and tire pressure. It is good practice to learn the sounds of your car to know what is normal for your car and when there is a problem. By following these tips you may be able to avoid breakdowns and some of the avoidable major repairs.

Janis Joplin sang, “O Lord, won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz.” These days it seems only the Good Lord could afford one. At least that’s the perception. When you factor in the total cost of ownership as well as all the factors like personal satisfaction, peace-of-mind, confidence, etc… it could be that owning a nice European made car is actually a bargain.

Granted, if you are buying a new Benz every two or three years then that entirely negates the argument. It doesn’t take much to get to a $100,000 price tag with these beauties.

My education on this principle came when I read a book that was popular a few years ago, The Millionaire Next Door. In this book, the author advised buying used, late model premium vehicles like a Mercedes Benz or Volvo. These cars tend to have a long life when well maintained. If you can drive a car for twenty years it’s not hard to see that your average cost per year for a vehicle comes way down.

Obviously, it means you have to purchase a quality vehicle to begin with. Not to knock American-made cars but let’s be real. You aren’t likely to be able to get twenty years of driving out of Chevy Aveo regardless of how religiously you stick to a service schedule. How many 1990 Ford Escorts do you see on the road these days?

Some people are averse to buying a used car. So be it. But when you let someone else absorb the depreciation it makes much more sense. With the economy as bad as it has been there will be a lot of high end cars on the market recently orphaned. As it is with real estate - it’s a buyer’s market right now.

You’ll still have to do a little homework to research what particular models offer the best value and have reported the least amount of problems. Again, keep the long term in mind. A few weeks of research is nothing compared to the satisfaction of driving a luxury car for twenty years. Heck, you might even be able to hand this car off to one of your grandkids.

Budgeting for repairs and routine service work will still be necessary. Maintenance isn’t cheap on European cars. Keep in mind that cheap isn’t the same thing as value. Every time you put new tires on or have the car serviced it’s going to be a little painful to the wallet. Again, it’s important to consider the total cost of ownership not just one repair or oil change. Don’t be shortsighted.

Saving some money by learning to do a few things yourself is an option. It’s important not to bite off more than you can chew. Paying for a tow truck to haul your do-it-yourself project to the garage will definitely eat up all your savings. But changing the oil, bulbs, windshield wipers, and other similar small jobs is very doable. Besides, you might as well get to know the car you’re going to be driving for the next decade or two.

“Worked hard all my life,” Janice sang. Put your hard earned money to good work. Get a long term perspective on car ownership. And by all means, if all your friends drive Porsches, get some new friends who drive an old Mercedes-Benz.

Automotive repair and home repair are two categories in which Indianapolis residents are looking for ways to save money. Squeezing a little more mileage out of car and home are two places to do just that. As radio personality Dave Ramsey says during every one of his shows, a paid off mortgage has replaced the BMW as status symbol of choice.

For many cash strapped car owners, do-it-yourself car repair and maintenance is now a necessity. Budgets are tighter now than ever so families are looking for ways to make their dollar go farther.

In the past, you might have taken your car in for an oil change or a brake job without thinking about it. Nowadays it might make sense to try and take care of routine maintenance in your own garage. With a growing number of online “how to” tools and the classic Chilton manuals, the once timid home mechanic is motivated and equipped to tackle his or her own tune-up.

Unfortunately, once out of the realm of very basic car repair, a would-be mechanic can quickly get in over his head. Systems are quite complex in most cars as so much is now computerized. Standing next to a pile of parts with an engine partially dismantled is not time to discover you’ve bitten off more than you can chew.

Learning how to change your own oil may be a good place to start. If you do decide to change your own oil, be sure you know what to do with the old fluid. Environmentally friendly disposal is a must.

For most of your repair needs it is still going to be necessary to find a car shop with mechanics qualified to service your particular vehicle. Take the time to look around before you need someone. Often, an independent repair shop will be a cheaper option than the dealership. Just do your research.

Homeowners are also joining the do-it-yourself crowd. With the real estate market as depressed as it is now is a terrible time to try and sell a home. Just like with auto repair, Indianapolis homeowners are choosing to tackle their own repair and maintenance jobs to save money.

Advice here is similar. Don’t be afraid to learn how to do some repairs on your own but be smart about it. It’s one thing to fix a toilet and something else entirely to try to replace an electrical panel. A failed attempt at a home improvement project or fix can turn out to cost more in the end than what it would have cost to hire a professional in the beginning.

In addition to saving money it can be very satisfying to handle something that you previously paid someone else to do. Remember to keep these 3 things in mind:

Be Brave

Be Prepared

Be Smart

Don’t be afraid to learn something new. Take the time to study the procedure and be sure to have all the tools and materials you need before you start. Don’t start something you can’t finish. Use your brain. When your best friend or your spouse suggests you hire a professional…do it.

A little sweat equity can make a difference in the monthly cash flow. It may be worth it to give it a try. However, do-it-yourself automotive repair and home repair isn’t for everyone. Better have a qualified mechanic or contractor you can call for back-up. The best in Indianapolis is Euro Motorworks.

I have a friend who has never owned a car other than a volkswagen for the past 41 years. Not the same car, but every car he has owned in that time has been a volkswagen.

That fact alone is testament enough to the reliability of the brand, but you’d think he’d want some variety: a change of pace, as it were. Apparently volkswagen has offered up enough variety over the years to appease not only my friend, but also the public at large.

Maintenance has never been an issue with his cars. He had used the same local mechanic for all of his service needs until the mechanic’s untimely death in 1994. That’s when my friend found Euro Motorworks.

Euro Motorworks has serviced all of his cars for the past 15 years, and it looks like they’re going to continue in that capacity for many years to come.
